Your FREE Dumb Look

Dumb Looks, Still Free! One of my two cats... this is the one that provides the constant Dumb Looks and is the sweetest cat around. Maine Coon male and typical of same, in which most of the males are goofs and the females try to distance themselves from the fact they are the same breed. His brother is the intelligent one...And there you have it, Red Van Tabby markings on a Maine Coon. Nothing bad has ever come out of the refrigerator... and yes, it is fluff, not as bad as a Persian, but very fluffy dry fur.

All American Cats from Purrbodys.

Who are the parents of your Purrbodys cats?

These two boys are the result of Tasmanian Devil (Taz) and the sole breeding of Sweet Magnolia. Pet quality in coloration, but lovely personalities and relatively easy going (although they did pick up some jumpiness from another cat previously owned here).

I hope you are luckier with your sons of Tasmanian Legend than I am. I own two Purrbodys cats, a male named Purrbodys Beauregard and a female, retired breeder, named Purrbodys English Rose. They are half-sibs sired by Purrbodys Shark Bay ('Mako') who is a son of Tasmanian Legend and Purrbodys Koordarrie. Both of my cats are positive for the primary genetic defect that causes Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) in Maine Coons. In addition, I am aware of a third half-sib, also sired by Mako, who died at age 2 in 2004 of HCM. The most likely source of these three cases is Mako, who himself probably inherited the defect from one or both of his parents. There's nothing much to be done with a cat with HCM, but it may be helpful to know the genetic status of your pets, which you can get tested here:

Thank you, muchly! I will look into this and see what their status is... the boys will be at a good vet while I am out searching for a new home, so plenty of time to get it done.

It would be easier to ask Purrbodys the genetic status of your cats' parents, but I can't judge what their response would be. I had my two tested specifically because I discovered their dead half-sib on the internet. You can read about him here:

Purrbodys failed to mention this cat when I purchased my coons in July, 2005 and January, 2006. Needless to say, when I got the results of the genetic testing, my communication with Purrbodys wasn't very polite. Now, they're not speaking to me!

We picked the boys up in '99, if I recall... the only problem with the Van Red was with developing Type 1 diabetes as a kitten, but he actually grew out of that, although we do keep him on science diet rd just to make sure. Wish he could contact the homeworld for that and see what it can offer us mere humans...

We haven't had much interaction with the breeder since the first year or so... but it does sound like they have a genetic problem that needs to be addressed.

Thank you for the forewarning and information!
